vCenter 5.x Hardware Status is not available

Problem

In the Hardware Status tab of the vCenter you see following message:

No new host data available. Data will be updated in 5 minutes

When you click Update after a few seconds this message shows up:

Solution

The most common reason for this error is, that the vCenter Inventory Service on the vCenter Host is not running.
